§ Mr. Fryasked the Minister of Transport how many moped, scooter and motor cycle riders were trained in 1978 and 1979, respectively, by (a) the RAC-ACU scheme, (b) the national training scheme and STEP and (c) all other local authority schemes; and what percentage of first-time riders in these years the totals of trained riders represent.
743W
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeThe information I have on the total number of riders trained is as follows:
1977–78 1978–79 RAC/ACU 11,630 13,930 1978 1979 April-December STEP 10,266 25,482 I have no information on the breakdown between moped, motor scooter and motor cycle riders, nor on the numbers trained under other schemes. The best estimate that can be made of the proportion of new riders taking training suggests that this may now be of the order of 15 per cent.
§ Mr. Fryasked the Minister of Transport if he will list the accident rates for powered two-wheel riders in each year from 1968 to 1978, and compare the accident rates in each quarter from July 1978 to June 1979 with those in the corresponding quarters of the previous 12-month period.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeI regret that the information is not available in the precise form requested. However, the following is available:
