HC Deb 14 March 1980 vol 980 c752W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will publish a table showing for 1979, or the most recently available part of 1979, the number of motor cars imported into the United Kingdom from the following countries, and the proportion this represents of United Kingdom motor vehicle sales: Japan, West Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

Mr. Parkinson

Following is the information:

NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM 1979
Source Number Percentage of total new car registrations
Japan 185,084 10.8
West Germany 233,302 13.6
France 198,016 11.5
Italy 93,465 5.5
Spain 49,535 2.9
Sweden 34,439 2.0
Total new car registrations United Kingdom 1,716,275

The above table provides information of new registrations of imported vehicles which can be directly compared with total new vehicle registrations. For reasons of timing and coverage, these figures of registrations of imported cars differ from the figures published in the "Overseas Trade Statistics" showing the number of cars imported during the year.
