Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of the total nursing staff in National Health Service hospitals is engaged exclusively in the care of the mentally ill or handicapped; what this figure represents in terms of staff per 100 patients; and what are the comparable figures in other National Health Service hospitals.

Mr. Fairgrieve

24.9 per cent., which represents 57 nurses for 100 patients. The comparable figures for maternity are 8.9 per cent. and 241 and for other hospitals 66.2 per cent. and 133.

Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of National Health Service beds is occupied by mentally ill and mentally handicapped persons; and what percentage of the total number of consultants works with such patients.

The percentages are 45.1 and 12.8, respectively.
