HC Deb 12 March 1980 vol 980 c581W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether, in the light of the Helsinki Agreement, he will take steps to inquire about the present health and conditions and application to emigrate of Ida Nudel, now serving a sentence of internal exile in Siberia.

Mr. Blaker

The Government's policy is to raise individual human rights cases with the Soviet authorities when we judge that this might be effective. We shall also maintain pressure on the Soviet Government for implementation of the Helsinki Final Act. To reveal all the details of our representations might undermine their effectiveness. The Government are very well aware of the distressing case of Mrs. Ida Nudel and of reports that she is unable to obtain medical treatment.
