Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what research staff are directly employed by the Committee on Safety of Medicines;

(2) what funds are available to the Committee on Safety of Medicines for independent research.

None of the staff on the secretariat of the Committee on Safety of Medicines, who are officials of the Department, are primarily employed to undertake research, nor does the committee have any funds to commission research. The committee may, however, request the licensing authority to commission independent research on its behalf.
