HC Deb 11 March 1980 vol 980 cc533-4W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Minister of Transport to what extent traffic control devices currently being tested will require the import of electronic components and what will be the cost of such imports.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Department carries out tests on complete manufactured equipment to see that it meets the Department's requirements. It is difficult to indicate the extent to which imported electronic components are used.

Traffic control equipment for use on motorways is almost entirely of British manufacture, but a foreign supplier provides some equipment for use on other roads, and this employs foreign components. Various products from this supplier are currently being tested and if found acceptable would be available for general use. As a result the company concerned is likely to increase its share of the market, the value of which stands at present at £2 million per annum.
