HC Deb 10 March 1980 vol 980 cc454-5W
Mr. Marks

asked the Minister of Transport if he will amend the traffic signs and general direction order to make mandatory in Great Britain, as it is in Northern Ireland, the provision of chapter 8 of the traffic signs manual.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There is already a legal obligation to provide such traffic signs and lights as may be needed to warn road users of obstructions caused by road works. The manual lays down a code of practice for application according to local needs. My right hon. Friend has no present intention to make it mandatory, but will reconsider the matter if experience in Northern Ireland proves favourable.
