asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list those organisations which have made representations to him for curtailment or abolition of maternity benefit rights and also those organisations which have made representations to him opposing the Government's proposed changes as outlined in his consultative document and subsequent Employment Bill.

The precise information requested is not available. Some indication can be obtained from the census of employment though this relates to individual workplaces which may not represent undertakings. The unit in the census for which information is reported is usually a complete individual address such as a shop, factory or office. The branches of multiple firms thus constitute separate units. In some cases, there can be more than one census unit for a single address. This happens where the firm supplies information for different groups of employees, eg the monthly and weekly paid, on separate returns.

Analyses of these census units, covering all industries and services except agriculture and horticulture and private domestic service, are available for the size bands given in the table below.
