Mr. Prescott

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the extent of grants and financial assistance given to the British fishing industry and particularly those based in the port of Hull for 1970, 1975 and 1979; and whether this is greater or less than that given to other Community nations' fleets.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Figures for expenditure provided by fisheries departments for the United Kingdom fishing industry in respect of financial years, is published annually in the Appropriation Accounts and the Supply Estimates presented to Parliament, as follows:

representations he received from the city of Hull on 6 February about the crisis facing its fishery industry; and what reply he gave.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

My right hon. Friend and I met a delegation from Hull on 7 February for a full discussion of the problems of the fishing industry in that city. My right hon. Friend undertook that the representations made at the meeting would be fully considered in the context of the Government's overall policy.
