§ Mr. Onslowasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what discussions his Department has had with United States of America manufacturers of light aircraft about the possible production or assembly of such aircraft in Northern Ireland; what expenditure has so far been incurred; what independent advice he has sought on the viability of these projects; and whether Short Bros. and Harland has been involved in these discussions throughout.
§ Mr. Giles ShawAs I announced on 14 February 1980, the Learavia Corporation of Reno, Nevada, intends, with the support of the Government, to establish production in Northern Ireland of the Lear Fan business aircraft now under development. Details of financial assistance awarded to individual companies in Northern Ireland are considered confidential, and I therefore regret that details of expenditure on this project cannot be provided. I can, however, assure my hon. Friend that advice on Lear Fan's prospects was obtained from independent consultants and aerospace experts as well as from sources within Government. Short Brothers Limited was not directly involved in the discussions but was consulted and kept advised.
Discussions are now continuing with another United States aerospace corporation regarding the possible manufacture of light aircraft in Northern Ireland. No expenditure has been incurred to date, nor has Short Brothers been involved so far.
