HC Deb 07 March 1980 vol 980 cc350-1W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing private consumption, Government consumption and investment, distinguishing between private and public investment, as percentages of gross domestic product in each member State of the European Economic Community, and in the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Sweden and Japan, at the latest dates for which the information is available.

Mr. Biffen

The percentage distribution of gross domestic product among the categories private consumption, Government consumption and investment for each of the countries specified is given in table 2A of the United Nations "Yearbook of National Accounts Statistics 1978, Volume 11 International tables". The latest year for which information is available on a comparable basis is 1977. For Japan, 1976 is the latest year shown in the United Nations publication, but data for 1977 are given in "National Accounts of OECD Countries 1960–77". The percentage distribution of the gross domestic product in 1977 was as follows: private consumption 58, Government consumption 10, fixed investment 30, change in stocks 1.

The division of investment between public and private is available only for a few countries. The figures are given in the following table.
