HL Deb 05 March 1980 vol 406 c388WA
Lord KENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many vessels used as fuel carriers by British Nuclear Fuels Limited are purpose-built, how many have been adapted, and for how long it is anticipated that adapted vessels will have to be used.

The MINISTER of STATE, DEPARTMENT of EMPLOYMENT (The Earl of Gowrie)

BNFL currently use one ship which is purpose-built to their requirements and one which is adapted. BNFL inform me that they have no plans to stop using adapted ships. Irradiated fuel is carried in flasks which under international regulations require approval by both the competent authority of the country of origin of shipment and of the United Kingdom. These regulations do not require carriage in ships of special design.

House adjourned at thirteen minutes before ten o'clock.
