HC Deb 04 March 1980 vol 980 c166W
Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what the level of student grants was in 1962 compared with the present grant level in real terms.

Dr. Boyson

For students outside London the basic rates of grant for the academic year 1962–63 were £300—for those living in lodgings—and £320—for those living in hall or college. In the current academic year the basic rate of grant for both categories is £1,245, representing at current prices 94 per cent. and 88 per cent. of the comparable rates for 1962–63.
