HC Deb 03 March 1980 vol 980 c51W
Mr. Mellor

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on the prospects of the resumption of direct commercial flights between the United Kingdom and Turkish Cyprus.

Mr. Tebbit

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus, who are the only Government in Cyprus recognised by Her Majesty's Government, have declared that the airport of Ercan in northern Cyprus is not an approved airport under Cyprus legislation. As party to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, the United Kingdom is obliged to accept the prohibition. The restoration of communications to the whole of the island of Cyprus must depend on a satisfactory settlement of the inter-communal dispute. The Government are doing everything in their power to promote such a settlement.
