HC Deb 30 June 1980 vol 987 cc382-3W
Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what was the absolute number of employees in the nationalised industries and services in the United Kingdom in 1950, 1960, and 1970 and at the most recent date for which figures are available;

(2) what proportion of total employment in the United Kingdom was represented by the nationalised industries and services in 1950, 1960 and 1970, and at the most recent date for which figures are available.

Mr. Jim Lester

The information for 1961 and later years is given in an article, "Employment in the public and private sectors 1961–78" on page 90 of the November 1979 issue ofEconomic Trends. In 1960, the nationalised industries, which then did not include the Post Office, employed 1,830,000 people, or 7.7 per cent. of civilian employment. Figures for 1950 are not available.
