HC Deb 26 June 1980 vol 987 cc284-5W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the number of civil servants in the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Northern Ireland Office; and on the basis of forenames, surnames and schools attended, how many are presumed Protestants and how many are presumed Roman Catholics.

Mr. Rossi

On 31 May 1980 there were 33,392 civil servants employed in the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Northern Ireland Office.

Presumptions of religious belief are not necessary for the recruitment or employment of civil servants in Great Britain or Northern Ireland and I do not therefore propose to make them.
