HC Deb 24 June 1980 vol 987 c81W
27. Mr. Trippier

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the future levels of employment in the North-West of England.

Mr. Jim Lester

The future levels of employment in the North-West, as in the country as a whole, are largely dependent upon our ability to conquer inflation. This will be achieved only if both sides of industry and commerce work together to improve the competitiveness of their firms, notably by bargaining responsibly over pay and conditions and by improvements in productivity, quality and reliability. Success in this will lead to more people buying British. This is the way to create permanent new jobs.
