asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the current level of capital expenditure and the number of employees in (a) the British Gas Corporation, (b) the British National Oil Company and (c) the National Coal Board.

Forecasts of capital expenditure in the current financial year on fixed assets for the industries concerned were published in the White Paper Cmnd. 7841 and were (at outturn prices): British Gas £589 million, the British National Oil Corporation £300 million, and the National Coal Board £812 million. The number of BNOC employees at the end of December 1979 was 1,423, and at the end of March 1980 total employees of British Gas were 104,424, and of the NCB were 264,299.
