asked the Minister for the Civil Service how much Government money was spent in each of the last five years on public service broadcasts on the commercial companies and on the British Broadcasting Corporation.

The amounts—in current prices—spent in each of the last five financial years on Government advertising on commercial television and radio are as follows:

1975–76 £4,539,000
1976–77 £3,706,000
1977–78 £5,029,000
1978–79 £6,940,000
1979–80 £7,524,000

The public service filler material broadcast both by the commercial television and radio networks and by the British Broadcasting Corporation as well as the BBC radio public service announcements are all transmitted free of charge.
