HC Deb 19 June 1980 vol 986 c644W
Mr. George Robertson

asked the Minister of Transport how many people are killed or seriously injured each year as a result of motorists exceeding statutory speed limits.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Obviously, excessive speed can play a part in causing an accident and can make those that occur more serious. But no reliable estimate is possible of the number of deaths and injuries due specifically to exceeding statutory speed limits.
