HL Deb 18 June 1980 vol 410 cc1196-8WA
Lord BROCKWAY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What response they have made to the appeal made by the United Nations World Food Council, on the motion of Canada, that urgent food aid should be provided to Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, many of whose peoples are hungry following the drought in eastern Africa.

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN and COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS (Lord Carrington)

We are seriously concerned about the food stortage in East Africa. In view of the urgency of the situation in Somalia, we are allocating straight away 5,000 tonnes of our bilateral food aid programme to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as part of our £850,000 contribution to his appeal for Somalia. We shall be considering what further action to take in the light of the resources available.

House adjourned at twenty-nine minutes before seven o'clock.
