The numbers of applications for and refusals of legal aid for all criminal and care proceedings by petty sessional division are published annually in Criminal Statistics, England and Wales (table 25 of the volume for 1978, Cmnd. 7670). The information available centrally does not show separately the numbers of applications refused under section 29(3) of the Legal Aid Act 1974, which enables a court to refuse to make a legal aid order unless the person first makes a payment on account of any contribution towards costs he may be liable to make at the conclusion of the case.
