HL Deb 16 June 1980 vol 410 cc957-8WA
Lord EVANS of CLAUGHTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why Miss Una McCullum, the Governor of H.M. Borstal, East Sutton Park, Kent, was forbidden to take part in a recent Conference on Law, Society and Crime at Mentmore Towers, Bucks, organised by the Ministry of Natural Law and Order of World Government of Enlightenment, the Indian Institute of Law and Order and the Maharishi European Research University, when among other distinguished speakers a judge of the International Court of Justice at The Hague, a local coroner and a Professor of Law all took part.

The PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE, HOME OFFICE (Lord Belstead)

It is contrary to Home Office policy that transcendental meditation should be used in Prison Department establishments, and staff were accordingly advised that permission would not be given for attendance at the conference in an official capacity since this would be likely to cause the department's policy to be misunderstood.
