Mr. Brittan

Table I gives the number of male prisoners, including those sentenced to life imprisonment, segregated under rule 43 on 1 May 1980, the latest date for which figures are available.

Table II gives the number of female prisoners segregated under rule 43 on 6 June 1980. No female life-sentence prisoner was segregated under rule 43.

On 1 June 1980 197 male prisoners, including two life-sentence prisoners, were located in special units at Gloucester, Maidstone and Wakefield. All these prisoners had been segregated under rule 43 for their own protection at their previous establishments. The 197 are not included in table I.

The extent to which these prisoners associate together for purposes such as work, exercise, bathing, attendance at religious ceremonies, and in some cases in dormitories, differs according to establishments.
