§ Mr. Skinnerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will investigate alternative methods of dealing with young offenders, with a view to placing more emphasis on community service.
§ Mr. BrittanThe community service order is already available for young offenders aged 17 and over; for juveniles, intermediate treatment activities under a supervision order can involve community work. It is for the courts to decide in each case whether such disposals are appropriate, but we are concerned to encourage their use by promoting the development of the necessary facilities.
