HL Deb 06 June 1980 vol 409 c1760WA
Lord RENTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which trade unions have rules which require their members to oppose capitalism or to support socialism or to do both of those things.

The MINISTER of STATE, DEPARTMENT of EMPLOYMENT (The Earl of Gowrie)

An examination of the rule books of the 20 largest unions reveals that about half of them make potential provision within their declaratory statements of intent for the furtherance of policies which could be construed as supporting socialism and/or opposing capitalism. There appears to be no such provision in respect of the remaining unions.

House adjourned at twenty-two minutes past twelve o'clock.
