HC Deb 04 June 1980 vol 985 c748W
26. Mr. Straw

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what will be the estimated number of house building starts in (a) the private sector and (b) the local authority sector in England and Wales in the current year.

Mr. Stanley

In the private sector, returns by builders in March suggested that they might start about 130,000 new houses and flats in Great Britain this year. Normally, about 90 per cent, of private sector starts are in England and Wales. The number of starts by local authorities will depend on the proportion of their single-block housing investment programme allocations which individual authorities decide to use for new house building; the HIP submissions for 1981–82 to be received later in the summer will contain indications of their intentions.
