HC Deb 04 June 1980 vol 985 c755W
49. Mr. John Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his latest estimate of the number of dwellings in (a) housing action areas and (b) general improvement areas.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

It is estimated that the total number of dwellings in housing action areas and general improvement areas at present is 133,769 and 360,166 respectively.

50. Mr. Brinton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many dwellings in England and Wales lack basic amenities or are in a serious state of disrepair.

Mr. Stanley

The results of the English and Welsh house condition surveys carried out in 1976 indicate that there were, at that time, about 1.6 million dwellings in England and Wales which lacked one or more basic amenities. There is no single definition of serious disrepair, but a further 1.4 million dwellings at that time needed repairs costing more than £1,000, of which about 600,000 dwellings needed repairs costing more than £2,000.
