§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent the prison services could be improved if the whole of the outstanding fines for which time for payment had 512W expired on 1 May 1980 were paid; and whether he will take action along those lines to obtain the necessary funds to finance improvements in the prison services.
§ Mr. BrittanAllocation of resources to the prison service is determined within the Government's overall provision for public expenditure, and it would not be appropriate for it to be made in any way dependent upon the effective payment of fines.
