HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 cc529-30W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent he estimates revenue to Her Majesty's Treasury would increase if the sale of index-linked bonds was made available to men aged between 60 and 65 years.

Mr. Lawson

On the assumption that a similar proportion of men aged 60 to 64 invested in index-linked national savings certificates retirement issue as do those at present eligible to purchase, and the average amount invested was similar to the current average holding, the amount of additional investment would be £186.44 million.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount invested in index-linked bonds which are restricted to women over 60 years and men over 65 years.

Mr. Lawsonwas

The total amount invested in index-linked national savings certificates retirement issue at the end of April 1980 was £1,493.2 million principal and the value of index-linked increases £376.9 million.
