HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 cc544-5W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what his estimate of investment, per capita, in manufacturing in the United Kingdom in the period 1974–79 is and how this figure compares as a percentage with the per capita figures for (a) the United States of America, (b) France, (c) Japan and (d) Germany.

Mr. David Mitchell

Investment in national currencies has been converted to sterling using purchasing power parities, prepared by the Statistical Office of the European Communities, for France and the Federal Republic of Germany. Comparable purchasing power parities are not available for Japan and United States of America and exchange rates have been used. The data for France include the mining, quarrying, gas, electricity and water industries.
