HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 c590W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will express Government expenditure on Gaelic, direct or indirect, as a percentage of Government expenditure in Scotland for the last convenient year.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Grants from Government funds to the various bodies associated with the Gaelic language and culture, either direct or through the Scottish Arts Council, were about £156,000 in 1979–80. Information about expenditure in this field by local authorities is not available centrally. Total identifiable public expenditure by central Government in Scotland in 1979–80 was about £3,726 million.
