Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many prescriptions were issued for the drugs cannabis and heroin in Northern Ireland in 1979.

Mr. Alison

No prescriptions for cannabis or pure heroin were issued in 1979. Heroin-diamorphine hydrochloride is used as an ingredient in certain prescriptions, for example in the treatment of cancer, but details of the number of such prescriptions issued are not available.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many prescriptions were issued in Northern Ireland for the following categories in 1979: tranquillisers, non-barbiturate hypnotics and anti-depressants.
