Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if any of the 670 staff savings in his Department, in the Office of Fair Trading and the Export Credits Guarantee Department, announced on 6 December 1979 have yet been made; and, if not, when he expects them to be achieved and in what divisions, at what grades, and in which geographical regions.

Mr. Nott

Of the 670 staff savings announced on 6 December 1979, 300 have been achieved to date. The remainder are due to be achieved by 1 April 1983. Grading details have not yet been settled in all cases. Within the Office of Fair Trading 34 posts remain to be saved in connection with consumer credit licencing and 6 from the consumer affairs and legal divisions and from the economics branch. Within the Export Credits Guarantee Department 115 posts remain to be saved, the majority from computerisation of short-term business and the balance from streamlining procedures across the department.

Within the Department of Trade the remaining 215 savings are due to be made in the civil aviation, commercial relations, consumer affairs, exports, information and regulatory divisions. Where at present known the details of grades and of geographical locations are given in the following table.
