asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any powers to instruct the Bank of England with respect to shares held by the bank in any company.

Under section 4 of the Bank of England Act 1946, the Treasury may give such directions to the Bank of England, after consultation with the Governor of the Bank, as it thinks necessary in the public interest.
