§ Mr. Beithasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress has been made by the Cambridge sea mammals research unit in assessing the rate of salmon consumption by seals.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneThe sea mammal research unit of the Natural Environment Research Council is collecting information on the daily energy requirements of grey seals. This information will contribute to future assessments of the daily consumption of fish by grey seals. Research projects directed specifically towards aspects of the interactions between seals, and salmon and other fish, are under consideration.
