HC Deb 31 July 1980 vol 989 cc787-8W
4. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will introduce legislation regarding minimum standards of nuclear fall-out shelters and to prevent misleading claims about their performance.

Mr. Brittan

My right hon. Friend is planning to produce guidance on domestic shelters by the end of the year. The existing law should be adequate to deal with the sale of shelters which would fail to provide the level of protection claimed for them.

22. Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what studies are taking place on the question of nuclear fall-out shelters; and when he expects to be able to issue further guidance to the public.

Mr. Brittan

As part of the review of civil home defence, on which my right hon. Friend will shortly be making a statement, a Home Office working group, on which other Government Departments are represented, is examining shelter design with a view to making advice and a range of designs available to the public by the end of the year.
