HC Deb 31 July 1980 vol 989 cc833-4W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will cause an investigation to be made to ascertain who was responsible for paying £30 a week social security benefit to a German citizen, Mr Hans Dickenson from Dusseldorf, to enable him to hire a car to undertake a holiday tour of Great Britain; whether the person or persons responsible will be dismissed; how many similar types of cases are on record within his Department; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Prentice

Nationals of the other European Community countries who come here to look for work are able to get supplementary benefit temporarily, providing they register for work and satisfy the normal conditions. Special control procedures apply if benefit continues for more than a few weeks. In the time available I have not been able to trace the case to which the hon. Member refers, but benefit would be refused to a holiday-maker.
