HC Deb 31 July 1980 vol 989 cc778-9W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Prime Minister if she will invite scientists from the universities of Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield to investigate the incident at Hollinwell carnival in Sutton-in-Ashfield on Sunday 13 July, when 200 to 300 children and adults suffered serious sickness from causes as yet unidentified.

The Prime Minister

As indicated by the statement issued last week by the Ashfield district council, the council, in conjunction with a number of other bodies, has carried out a careful investigation into the incident. Scientists from many disciplines have already been closely concerned.

The council hopes to publish a full report by the end of next week. I have at present no grounds for thinking that a further investigation could usefully be undertaken, but, when this full report is available, it will be possible to arrive at a firmer judgment.
