HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 c470W
Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will now announce the final balance of the aid package for the New Hebrides which has been agreed between himself and the French Government.

Mr. Maker

Unlike us, the French Government do not enter into aid agreements until after independence has taken place. We nevertheless have a general understanding of the areas which we are each prepared to support. The New Hebrides Government have not yet signified their agreement to our own aid package.

Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Lord Privy Seal what agreement has now been made with the Government of Papua New Guinea for the replacement of the British Marines by Papua-New Guinea troops in the New Hebrides.

Mr. Blaker

Her Majesty's Government have not entered into any agreement with the Government of Papua New Guinea on this subject.
