§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Defence what contribution he intends to make in the raising of the "Mary Rose", which sank in 1554, the conservation of artifacts found within her and to the establishment of a building to hold the reclaimed ship, in view of the fact that the "Mary Rose" was the first purpose-built ship of the Royal Navy.
§ Mr. SpeedIt is not our policy to give financial assistance from the Defence Vote towards costs of restoring or preserving historic ships. Naval authorities at Portsmouth, however, have been authorised to give temporary and limited 529W practical assistance during the raising of the "Mary Rose", provided that it can be regarded as having a real training value for Naval personnel.
