HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 c478W
Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the proportion of the outflow of investment funds accounted by investment abroad in (a) industry, (b) property, (c) financial services and (d) other investment since the abolition of exchange controls.

Mr. Lawson

The information requested is not available.

Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the net outflow of investment funds by quarter since the liberalisation of exchange controls.

Mr. Lawson

Capital outflows since the dismantling of exchange controls are estimated to have been running at about £1 billion a quarter, the greater part representing repayment of foreign currency debt by United Kingdom companies. Overseas purchases of sterling assets over the same period have more than offset these outflows.
