HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 cc529-30W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Defence why the agreement dating from 1947 that the security of Gibraltar dockyard be maintained by the Gibraltar police has been ended, in view of the severe effect on the finances of Gibraltar; and if he will reconsider this decision.

Mr. Speed

The arrangement was terminated on 1 July 1980 at the request of the Gibraltar Government, who anticipated an increase in civil police tasks arising from the reopening of the frontier with Spain. Policing of naval establishments in Gibraltar is now in the hands of staff employed directly by MoD, and no review is planned.
