HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 c541W
Mr. David Young

asked the Minister of Transport what has been the average time in each of the last three years between the receipt of an application for a driver's licence and its dispatch by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre.

Mr. Fowler

During the last three years the proportion of driving licences issued within 10 working days of the receipt of the application was:

Per cent.
1977 71
1978 94
1979 94

These figures exclude periods when performance was disrupted by industrial disputes.

Mr. David Young

asked the Minister of Transport what is the present annual cost and the cost of operating the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre and the local licensing centres.

Mr. Fowler

The approximate total cost of operating the driver licensing and vehicle registration and licensing systems in 1979–80 was £67 million, of which around £35–5 million was in respect of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre, £12–5 million for operating the local vehicle licensing offices and £19 million mainly for support and agency services provided by other Government Departments and bodies.
