HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 cc565-6W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the completion date and cost of the latest district general hospital constructed in Scotland.

Mr. Fairgrieve

Inverclyde Royal hospital, Greenock, was handed over to the Argyll and Clyde health board in September 1978 and admitted its first patients in July 1979. The latest estimate of the cost of the hospital is about £14 million, including fees and equipment.

Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many new district general hospitals were identified as necessary in the 1962 hospital plan for Scotland; how many have been completed; how many are in an advanced planning stage; how many are in preliminary planning stages; how many have now been removed from the list of proposed projects; and if he will name the hospitals which fall into each category.

Mr. Fairgrieve

The 1962 hospital plan for Scotland identified 10 new district hospitals to be built in Scotland. These were, with their current status:

Inverness—phase I complete, phase II under construction.

Dumfries—complete.

Ayr—preliminary planning stage.

Kilmarnock—under construction (North Ayrshire DGH).

Coatbridge—complete (Monklands DGH).

Motherwell—preliminary planning stage.

Greenock—complete (Inverclyde Royal hospital).

Paisley—under construction.

Kirkcaldy—complete (Victoria hospital).

West Lothian—advanced planning stage.

Ninewells hospital, Dundee, was also included in the plan as a new teaching hospital. It is complete.
