§ Mr. Beithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consultations he has had with returning officers and with county councils about proposals to raise the deposit for Parliamentary elections; and whether he has suggested in the course of these consultations that an increase in the level of deposits would assist in the maintenance of public order.
§ Mr. BrittanAs the initial step in the Government's review of the Public Order Act 1936 and relates legislation, the Department circulated a preliminary paper to the local authority associations and others concerned asking for comments on a wide range of matters, including the level of the deposit for Parliamentary elections.
