HC Deb 22 July 1980 vol 989 cc158-9W
23. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will introduce new measures to resolve the problems of unemployment in West Cumbria.

Mr. Jim Lester

I accept that unemployment in West Cumbria is too high. The area will continue, however, to be eligible for a range of regional assistance despite some downgradings in assisted area status this August. Furthermore, all our special employment measures, which have helped a considerable number of people in West Cumbria, will continue to be available. Ultimately, however, only improved industrial performance which will allow our firms to compete more effectively at home and abroad, can create a genuine demand for labour and lead to a reduction in unemployment in West Cumbria and elsewhere in the country.
