HC Deb 22 July 1980 vol 989 c154W
12. Mr. Jim Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workers in the hosiery and knitwear industries in the East Midlands are covered by the Government's temporary short-term working scheme.

Mr. Jim Lester

Information is available only for the textile industry as a whole, in which there are currently some 1,700 workers on short-time under the scheme in Leicester and 9,286 in the Midlands.

44. Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the numbers employed in the hosiery and knitwear industries in the East Midlands and nationally at the latest available date and two years ago.

Mr. Jim Lester

At April 1980, the provisional number of employees in employment in Great Britain in the hosiery and other knitted goods industry (minimum list heading 417 of the Standard Industrial Classification 1968) was 101,400. The corresponding figure at April 1978 was 111,400. The latest information for the East Midlands region is for June 1977 when the number employed in the industry was 74,900.
