§ Mr. Norman LamontThere are a number of "log-effect" gas fires on the market. I understand that these are primarily designed to give a decorative effect rather than to meet a heating need.
The safety of these fires is covered by British Standard Specification BS 5258 part 12. A British standard to cover the thermal efficiency of "log-effect" fires is in preparation.
As with the purchase of any heating appliance, prospective purchasers of "log-effect" fires should deal with a supplier who will advise them about the appliances most suited to their needs. They should also look for a marking to indicate that it meets the safety Standard BS 5258, and should ensure that, in accordance with the Gas Safety Regulations 1972, it is installed by a competent installer such as a member of the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers (CORGI).
