HC Deb 22 July 1980 vol 989 c165W
51. Miss Wright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies were notified to his Department in the months of May, and June (a) in Birmingham and (b) the West Midlands.

Mr. Jim Lester

The numbers of proposed redundancies notified to my Department under the redundancy handling provisions of the Employment Protection Act 1975 for (a) Birmingham and (b) the West Midlands area for May and June 1980 are as follows:

(a) Birmingham
May
—4,607 employees at 46 establishments.
June
—5,602 employees at 84 establishments.
(b) West Midlands
May
—19,214 employees at 258 establishments.
June
—22,304 employees at 401 establishments.

There is no statutory duty to notify my Department when proposed redundancies do not take place.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the numbers of redundancies reported to it as due to occur in (a) Birmingham and (b) the West Midlands for May and June 1980 are as follows:

(a) Birmingham
May—1,061 employees.
June—195 employees.
(b) West Midlands
May—3,668 employees.
June—2,169 employees.

These figures are provisional since some redundancies are reported late. Both the Department of Employment and Manpower Services Commission figures are for redundancies involving 10 or more employees.
